It’s always a dreaded time having to do a Visa Run to obtain permission to live as a tourist in Thailand.

This time around I needed it to happen fast and without hassle. Many people travel to bordering countries like Cambodia or Laos and do all the travel and paperwork themselves. A Visa run to Vientiane, Laos’s capital is the way to go. My issue this time around was that the Thai Embassy was closed for a week in Vientiane due to the Kings birthday celebration.

I opted to book a trip with Thai Visa Service with the promise of a agonizing 10 hr mini bus trip from On-Nut in Bangkok to Savannakhet Laos.

It’s always a dreaded time having to do a Visa RunI meet the bus at 7pm at Tesco Lotus in On-Nut, choaked down a few last minute smokes and then hoped in the van. There were 4 vans doing the run this evening, with 40 tourists from nearly 40 different countries. A long drive through the night stopping every 1.5hrs saw us arrive at the boarder crossing at 6am. With the boarder not open until 7.30am we stood around waiting.

It took about 1.5 hours for us all to pass through, then it was time to jump back on a bus and go to the Thai Embassy to fill in our Visa paperwork and hand over our passports. Savannakhet has an excellent reputation for issuing back-to-back tourist visa’s and is nowhere near as crowded as the popular consulate in Vientiane. Due to Vientiane being closed for the holiday, Savannakhet was full of people, taking 3 hours to queue in the hot sun waiting for our turn.

They have a 24 hour turnaround time so it was off to the Savannah Vegas Hotel and Casino for the evening with our free buffet dinner. Now if your into gambling the casino is a great place to stay, but it’s not really my scene so we ventured into town.

Nothing to see here!! Savannakhet is a sleepy little town with no night life, no western food, not nothing so expect your time to be killed with drinking Beer Lao and wait.

Taking a bus tour to do your Visa run can be an easier proposition, especially if you are venturing to Savannakhet. If your choosing to goto Vientiane I would suggest doing it on your own as you could extend your stay and explore the capital which actually has things to see and do.
