Wat Tham Khao Noi is located in Kanchanburi next to Wat Tham Sua. This temple is worth witnessing first hand due to it’s unique 100 year old Chinese style architecture, known as Mahayana style.
The temple was constructed in 1881, with the first monk to reside in the temple being of Chinese descent named Luang Pu Haeng (Kak Neng).
Upon arrival at the temple, you will first be greeted by the formidable staircase leading to the top where you will find the impressive Golden Buddha and chedi.
If your not up for walk up the stairs, you can use the cable car service. Also worth noting is that this temple abides by the Buddhist dress code standards. If you are wearing shorts or a short skirt you can hire a sarong for 20thb at the base.
The Buddha itself, seated in the posture of giving blessing, is covered in gold mosaic and protected by a unique half clam shell-like structure.
The 8 story chedi, 69 meters high and nearly 30 meters wide with a small tiled staircase inside leading to the top levels. Stopping on each level to appreciate the detailed history depicted in art works on the ceiling and walls is a must.
The exterior of the chedi is covered in millions of mosaic tiles over it’s many ascending levels.
During my visit much of the artwork was being expanded upon, but there was still plenty available completed works to gaze at.
Each level has rows of Buddha statues in front of small windows which photos can be easily taken of the grounds below and surrounding rice paddies and rural areas.
The very top level has a central Buddha shrine, which many Chinese will be seen worshiping.
Wat Tham Sua Khao Noi is situated at the hill top of Tumbon Tha Muang (Tha Muang Suburb), 5 kilometers from Mae Klong Dam.
It’s location, only 12km from Kanchanaburi City is easily accessible by either tour bus, scooter rental or Songthaew.
