There are some truly strange places I have stumbled upon, and this one was some way by accident, though I had heard of it’s existence. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, then visiting the the evil dead at Wat Phai Rong Wua in Supanburi is a must.
A bit of history first, Wat Phai Rong Wua houses many of the world’s largest metal Buddhist objects. It is most famous for housing the largest bronze Buddha image in the world, but past the acres of temples, both Chinese and Thai, sits hell and damnation in all of its gore and form.
Featuring scenes of a tortuous hell, performed by creatures from the afterlife, this Buddhist temple complex is what most Thai’s are expecting hell to be like.
Some are poked in the face with a tridents, while others suffer, with their insides hanging out, in the jaws of giant monsters.
There are images of bodies being boiled alive, being eaten by wild wolves, have their gentiles mutilated with axes, and more that just has to be seen to be full understood.
There’s blood everywhere and loudspeakers around the complex describe the tortures these sinners have to undergo, though it is unfortunately in Thai.
This temple us mostly unknown to many who visit Thailand, but is an extremely popular destination for Buddhists, who flock here every year.
Wat Phai Rong Wua isn’t necessarily the kind of place you would want to take the children, through the demonic part of the grounds is only one small part. Thai’s will travel here though with their kids, to show them what can happen if they don’t say their prayers, or do bad deeds.
